With rising and falling melodies and intermingling crescendos and decrescendos, Howard Buss’s “Wave Train” evokes the image of waves crashing and rippling on the surface of the water. In his program notes, Buss included a poem he wrote to characterize the piece which describes these sound wave crests as timeless and infinite. We carefully and intentionally considered balance, dynamics, and articulation, allowing each instrument to portray its own waves.
“Stepping Out”, by Cindy McTee, is three short movements for virtuosic flute playing, accompanied by simple ‘undefined’ percussion instruments. After experimenting with several sounds, we landed on hand clapping and a woodblock for the first and last movements, respectively, to compliment the angular phrases and staccato articulations of the flute. For the slow middle movement, we chose the cabasa because it allowed for the percussive accompaniment to sustain with the longer tones and legato phrases in the flute melody.
Katherine Hoover’s Two Preludes includes two short contrasting movements commissioned to complete a series of pieces structured as preludes. “Uptown” is energetic and up tempo with a flute cadenza, misplaced accents, and odd meters, while “Out of Town” includes a siciliano-like rhythm that gives the piece a pastoral, eerie quality, centered around a vibraphone solo.
Reciprocity, Windstruck Duo’s first album, was initiated after our 2020 performance tour was canceled due to COVID. While all the recording, editing, mixing, and mastering was done in 2020/2021, we are just now releasing these tracks to the world. We won’t get into all the specific reasons for the delay… let’s just say that life throws curveballs all the time and taking the plunge to allow your sounds to reach the ears of your audience requires a lot of courage and humility. We hope that you enjoy the sounds we have made as much as we enjoyed the process of making it. The title, Reciprocity, reflects the true nature of making and sharing music with others, as well as the depth of our friendship which grew out of our love of playing chamber music together.
The full album includes works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Howard Buss, Gerado Dirié, Katherine Hoover, Cindy McTee, Ástor Piazzolla, Juan María Solare, and Ney Rosauro.
